Sagadahoc County is located in what is commonly referred to as the mid-coast region of Maine. The county's name is taken from the Sasanoa Indian word which means "mouth of big river." This is an appropriate name, as the Kennebec River flows south to meet with the Androscoggin River at Merrymeeting Bay, forming the very large freshwater river mouth. The area also supports a healthy fishing industry. Bath is Sagadahoc's county seat, and is known as the City of Ships. Since colonial times, this region has been a shipbuilding center and used to be the fifth-largest seaport in the country. Today, Bath is home to the Iron Works, one of the few shipyards still building warships for the U.S. Navy.

Sagadahoc County is popular to tourists and residents due mainly to the unique coastline. The brisk Atlantic waters provide great surfing and seashell collecting, which are big hobbies here. There are also many antique shops, the Maritime Museum, theatres, and other attractions. Around 37,000 people live here, attesting to the high quality of real estate properties and areas.
